A Message from Jack Leustig

As an artist, I love to collaborate. Before I went into fine art printing and publishing, I was a film director and producer in Los Angeles so I was trained to collaborate. Print making is also a collaboration between artists. But painting, or more generally fine art, is often an isolated pursuit and many artists never experience the rewards of collaboration. From my experience, the greatest reward is making something that neither individual could have created on their own. The art itself becomes a bond between two artists. On a second level, I am hoping to discover some wonderful talent. If you turn one of our drawings into a powerful piece of art, we will do everything we can at JLI to turn it into a commercial success. As coauthors, you will benefit from our efforts. And that goes beyond the winners of the cash prizes. There may be well over two artists that interpret a drawing successfully and we will publish and market all the versions that we feel are deserving of merit. Give it a try!

This competition started on September 1, 2007.
As soon as we have a number of submissions, we will post
selected pieces in a gallery that you can access.

NOT EXACTLY PAINT BY NUMBERS IS a painting competition in which artists take a line drawing from our website to use as the basis for a painting. The competing artist may use the line drawing as an exact basis or they may paint an interpretation of the original line drawing as long as the fundamental elements and composition of the drawing remain. If the artist fulfills the submission guidelines delineated below, they will then have the right to exploit the collaborative artwork as they see fit. Artists may work in the media of their choice including digital (collage with dimension is fine but no sculpture).

TO ENTER, an artist must fill out an Entry Form and a Submission and Publishing Agreement (both available as PDFs or Word files on this site) and send them along with an acceptable reproduction of their artwork (4” x 5” transparency or CD -
PLEASE READ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES BELOW) to:

JLI NEPBN
P.O. Box 273
Arroyo Seco, NM 87514

COST: There are no fees for entering this competition. If your artwork is selected for publication, all expenses associated with preparing your art for publishing will be the responsibility of JLI.

RETURN POLICY: If you would like your submission returned, you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). If your artwork is not selected for publishing and you do not include a SASE, you submission will be destroyed for your protection.

TIME FRAME: Each line drawing will be posted at this site permanently to allow artists to interpret it for publication during and after the student competition ends. We will continue to publish versions that we like. The student competition for cash prizes will end nine months after the initial posting and winners will be announced within the following thirty days. The initial posting date will be clearly displayed on the Drawing Download Page.

AWARDS: Student prize winners will be selected from the artworks that have been chosen by JLI for publishing. We are hoping to receive many efforts that will be suitable for publishing. The 1st place winner will receive a cash award of $1,000. The first runner up will receive a cash award of $500.

AWARD ELIGIBILITY: Any artist entering as a student must be attending an accredited college, university, art school or high school. If your piece is selected for a cash award, we will contact your educational institution to confirm your enrollment on the date of your submission. Winners will also need to provide use with their tax information to facilitate payment.

RIGHTS TO THE ARTWORK: Both the cash prize winners and all entries that have fulfilled their obligations as delineated in the Submission and Publishing Agreement, may published and exploited the artwork in any way they see fit with no further obligations to JLI. JLI, as coauthor, may published and exploited the artwork in any way it sees fit with no further obligations to the competitor.

IF YOUR SUBMISSION DOES NOT SATISFY THE GUIDELINES BELOW, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE THIS ARTWORK

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Because we are looking for quality art to publish, your submission must be of suitable resolution for fine art reproduction. For that reason, any artwork that is not digital in origin must be submitted as a 4” x 5” transparency or a digital file that was generated with a professional quality medium format or large format camera with a digital back (this includes the Better Light digital backs or Imacon/Hasselblad digital backs). Please have the artwork shot with color bars and a gray scale. The original digital file must be over 120 MB but not more than 400 MB. Do not shoot your art with a digital camera and then increase the size in Photoshop. The difference is obvious and we will not consider your artwork if the file is below our standards.

Digital art should be submitted at no less than 24 inches on the longest side at 300 pixels per inch. Please submit either TIFFs (for MAC) or PSD (Photoshop format) in RGB.
