In this new age of art reproduction where almost anyone can make a reasonably good print and put up a website, our very capabilities present a new problem; how do we get people into our stores when there are thousands of stores? At JLI we are trying to build a nexus site through these competitions where unpublished artists of merit can emerge. JLI has become an important printer and publisher because of our dedication to quality. That has brought us success through many accomplished artists and galleries, but what I am missing personally is the joy of exploring the new and emerging movements in art. I am hoping that through these competitions, we will build an exciting catalogue of artwork and in the process help in the emergence of new and meaningful artists. What we gain is a catalogue of art to sell in open editions and relationships with artists who may well become the future of our publishing company. What the artist gains is exposure, royalties on all sales, and a relationship with an industry-leading publisher. Please join us in this adventure in art.

This competition started on September 1, 2007.
As soon as we have a number of submissions, we will post
selected pieces in a gallery that you can access.

WINNERS IS a quarterly art competition that is open to all artists and subject matter (collage with dimension is fine but no sculpture). The top selections from each quarter (and as many honorable mentions as JLI chooses) will be added to our Winners Gallery, an open edition collection of art published by JLI on a royalty basis. All art selected for publishing will return a 10% royalty to the artist for retail and wholesale sales and the royalty may be increased to 20% if JLI chooses to represent ten or more pieces of an artist’s work. The top student selection each quarter will also receive a $500 cash prize. (For a detailed understanding of the above, please read the Submission and Publishing Agreement)

TO ENTER, an artist must fill out an Entry Form and a Submission and Publishing Agreement (both available as PDFs or Word files on this site) and send them along with an acceptable reproduction of their artwork (4” x 5” transparency or CD - PLEASE READ SUBMISSION GUIDLINES BELOW) to:

JLI Winners Competition
P.O. Box 273
Arroyo Seco, NM 87514

COST: There are no fees for entering this competition. If your artwork is selected for publication, all expenses associated with preparing your art for publishing will be the responsibility of JLI.

RETURN POLICY: If you would like your submission returned, you must include a self- addressed stamped envelope (SASE). If your artwork is not selected for publishing and you do not include a SASE, you submission will be destroyed for your protection.

CONTACT INFORMATION: Please be sure your contact information is accurate and will be accurate several months into the future. If your work is selected for publishing, we will need to contact you for the tax information necessary to pay your royalties.

SUBMISSION GUIDLINES: Because we are looking for quality art to publish, your submission must be of suitable resolution for fine art reproduction. For that reason, any artwork that is not digital in origin must be submitted as a 4” x 5” transparency or a digital file that was generated with a professional quality medium format or large format camera with a digital back (this includes the Better Light digital backs or Imacon/Hasselblad digital backs). Please have the artwork shot with color bars and a gray scale. The original digital file must be over 120 MB but not more than 400 MB. Do not shoot your art with a digital camera and then increase the size in Photoshop. The difference is obvious and we will not consider your artwork if the file is below our standards.

Digital art should be submitted at no less than 20 inches on the longest side at 300 pixels per inch. Please submit either TIFFs (for MAC) or PSD (Photoshop format) in RGB.
