Most of us have a of the mementos that keep a beloved, departed family member alive in our memories. Maybe it’s an uncle or a great grandmother, maybe a parent or even a child. They live in our hearts because they touched our lives, but what of our children and generations to come?
Will they know of that beloved family member?
These were the questions I asked myself when my mother sent me my Uncle Jack’s “shoebox.” He lived with
us when I was a boy, and then one
day he was gone.
My Uncle Jack went missing in action when his bomber was shot down in North Korea, but in my family he will
not be forgotten. Today his collage hangs in the homes of every one of
my family members. Children born
half a century after his death know
Uncle Jack as a handsome, brave young
man - a Family Hero. |
