Memorial Collages

Most of us have a “shoebox” of the mementos that keep a beloved, departed family member alive in our memories.

Maybe it’s an uncle or a great grandmother, maybe a parent or even a child. They live in our hearts because they touched our lives, but what of our children and generations to come? Will they know of that beloved family member?

These were the questions I asked myself when my mother sent me my Uncle Jack’s “shoebox.” He lived with us when I was a boy, and then one day he was gone.

My Uncle Jack went missing in action when his bomber was shot down in North Korea, but in my family he will not be forgotten. Today his collage hangs in the homes of every one of my family members. Children born half a century after his death know Uncle Jack as a handsome, brave young man - a Family Hero.

Collage Pricing

Because every collage is different, pricing is based on our estimate of the amount of work the project will take once we see the materials that you have provided us. Along with the materials, we would want to talk with you about your vision of the collage before we give you a quote for the project. Your quote would include the following services:

RESTORATION: The work starts with the restoration of each picture, document and artifact.

WHY RESTORE? THEY LOOK COOL OLD. Although the pictures of the person you are commemorating may look romantically aged to you, that is because you are connected to them as they are. But think of this collage as something that your great great grand children will look at. At that point in time the cracks and fading will simply look like damaged photos or documents. Restoration makes the images timeless. Clothing, hair and content will establish the romantic side of time. Damage will just be damage. And our restoration skills are among the finest in the country.

ASSEMBLY: Once each piece has been restored to the desired condition, our artists will organize the elements into a 1st proof collage. The 1st proof is then e-mailed or sent as a small print to the client for their changes (we always view the 1st proof as the point where we clarify the client’s vision). After the client’s input, we prepare a 2nd proof and follow the same procedure. Usually the 2nd proof is accepted by the client but if there are further changes a 3rd proof is included in your original quote. Any further changes after the 3rd proof will be charged at an hourly rate of $90.

PRINT: Your quote includes a first print of up to 400 square inches (20” x 20”) on Epson UltraSmooth Fine Art Paper. Additional prints are charged at our normal printing rate of 15 cents a square inch (height x width x .15) plus the cost of paper.

SO WHAT’S THE PRICE? Using the display collage from the previous page as an example, here is what we would have quoted for the work.

13 elements scanned = $156
3 photographs restored = $220
2 documents needing restoration = $250
6 medals restored with drop shadows = $110
Build the 1st proof = $250
Build the 2nd proof = $100
Proofing costs = $30
1st Print = $71
TOTAL COST = $1,187 / Our quote would have been $1,000

PREMIER EDITION: Jack Leustig oversees the building of all collages, but if you would like Jack to personally build your collage you may request it for an additional 50% charge. Your collage would then include a beautiful Certificate signed by the artist to authenticate your collage as a work of art by Jack Leustig.
