Jill Sanger

Artist’s Statement: Rainbow Children have no race, no one color. They are happy, joyful children sharing their goodness, their joy and love with people young and old. They lift your spirit and put a smile on your face. Children of all walks of life can see themselves in my pictures. In their world they are all equal. They represent all creation of mankind. They are the moon, mother earth, father time, god, and the keepers of the land, earth, and sky. They have no wants, no needs. They rejoice in life with no fear and total freedom.

Biography: Jill Sanger was born in New York City in 1947 where the streets of Manhattan and Queens were the world of her youth. Blessed with a positive and inquisitive mind, Jill left New York with her two daughters after her first marriage ended and set out to find her place in the world.

An artist by nature, Jill fit into the counterculture of her generation and joined a commune in Colorado where she met her lifelong partner, Glenn. They married and had a daughter of their own before moving to Taos, New Mexico.

Toas’ multi-cultural mix of Anglos, Spanish and American Indians presented a richness that resonated with Jill and she knew she had found her place. In 1989 she created and opened an Art Institute for children, Leaping Lizards School and Camp, that enriches the Taos community to this day as one of the most successful and culturally diverse educational institutions in Taos.

In 2001, while summering in Mexico, Jill had a visionary dream of her Rainbow Children. Upon her return to Taos, she started painting and has not stopped since. It is as if every step in her life was a journey to find these young characters who have no race or prejudice, who embody peace, harmony and love. Jill Sanger has emerged as a true and meaningful artist whose work flows like a river of watercolor paint directly from her heart.
